Wooden coffins
Wooden caskets are the most commonly used in Quebec. They can be made from different types of wood such as mahogany, walnut, cherry, pecan, maple, ash, cedar, poplar, white walnut, oak, Birdseye maple, pine, or fir. They can be painted, varnished, or lacquered.
A distinction is made between solid wood coffins and laminated coffins. These are made from plywood and are laminated with hardwood.
Wood veneer caskets are made with high density fiberboard and are covered with wood veneer.
Steel Caskets
Metal caskets are usually made with stainless steel, carbon steel, bronze, or copper. They are often more expensive than wooden caskets but are considered more durable and resistant to corrosion.
Steel caskets vary in thickness, from 16 gauge (thickest) to 20 gauge (thinnest)
Copper and bronze caskets are generally more expensive than wooden caskets.
Green Caskets
Green caskets are an ecological and economical option for funerals. The most popular materials are: cork, banana leaves, recycled cardboard, pulpboard, organic cotton, and hemp. They are biodegradable.
More original caskets
Some caskets can be made of fiberglass, plastic or glass. Caskets made from plywood and covered with fabric are the most economical options.
